The oatmeal cookies are low in fat-free oil, and can actually be done easily and virtually fat-free by the omission of the coconut.

When we got to our room in Kotor, Montenegro – which proved to be a shared apartment with another couple – it was raw cane sugar in the cupboard waiting for me. I took this as a sign that I had to make cookies.

With a water heater, oatmeal and whole wheat flour, it worked in my favor. I also used raisins, cinnamon and coconut, but you can add any combination of goodies you want. I used a technique I use for muffins and cookies that do not use any oil, because I still do not want everyone to carry with me on our travels. It is actually a good excuse for the full value of the methods that I much prefer to stay.

Fruit pies and chocolate chip cookies are two of the most versatile desserts that can be used anytime of the year, regardless of the festival or season. Here are some cooking tips to make these delicious desserts.

Fruit pies

Add juice unsweetened frozen fruit or canned to be used in place of water in the fruit topping for desserts. Use only unsweetened juice, however, because the juice with the sugar makes the dish too sweet.

For a richer filling, add a little fresh butter from the fruit after cooking a pie or cobbler. Otherwise, the point of filling with butter before putting the top crust of the pie.
